Transforming healthcare for the Hunter region, the $835 million John Hunter Health & Innovation Precinct delivers a fully integrated platform for clinical care, research, and education. One of New South Wales’ largest regional health investments, this campus expansion strengthens critical care delivery, expands clinical capacity, and positions the precinct as a leading centre for advanced care, workforce training, and innovation across Greater Newcastle and northern NSW.

Unifying critical care delivery with expanded infrastructure, the seven-storey Acute Services Building delivers major new clinical capacity. Expanded emergency and intensive care, 22 operating theatres, surgical, maternity, neonatal, imaging, and critical care services consolidate into an integrated platform. The campus connects directly with John Hunter Children’s Hospital, rehabilitation, ambulatory care, and community health. Co-located research and teaching facilities align clinical training and innovation partnerships with the Hunter Medical Research Institute and affiliated universities.

Retail integration operates as a functional extension of the hospital’s public interface, supporting circulation, amenity, and operational flow. Maytrix shaped the retail framework and design brief, mapping tenancy locations to arrival zones, public circulation paths, and interface points. Retail hubs deliver accessible food, beverage and support services for staff, patients, carers, researchers, and visitors while assisting orientation, wayfinding and engagement across high-traffic public domains.

This world-class health precinct will not only significantly enhance capacity for clinical care and collaboration between the health, research, and education sectors but also be a key driver of economic growth in the region.
— Brad Hazzard, Health Minister

The expanded campus delivers a comprehensive health and innovation platform designed for long-term growth and continuous improvement. Elevated gardens, landscaped courtyards, and cross-campus linkages aid navigation, provide patient and carer respite, and reinforce campus identity. Integrated infrastructure allows future expansion, improved parking, public transport access, and connections across adjoining hospitals, rehabilitation, aged care, and community health clusters.

A major phase in the $1.6 billion state investment to reshape healthcare, research, and education across the Hunter and South Western Sydney regions, John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct delivers access to expanded clinical and emergency care, fosters research growth and workforce development for the region. Informed by 15+ Health Infrastructure projects and extensive expertise in healthcare retail strategy, operational planning, and service integration, Maytrix shaped a resilient retail framework, reinforcing the precinct as a centre for excellence in care, research and innovation.

The $790M John Hunter redevelopment transforms healthcare for the region. Maytrix delivered the Retail Master Plan, resolving staging, logistics and retail zones to enable sustainable retail, access and public amenity.
