Reimagining healthcare access and community engagement, the $632 million Stage 2 redevelopment of Campbelltown Hospital establishes a dynamic civic and clinical destination for South Western Sydney. As one of the region’s most significant infrastructure investments, the project enhances acute and mental health capacity, expands paediatric and maternity care, and embeds community access at the heart of a purpose-built health campus.

Driving the hospital’s evolution into a civic anchor, the Retail Strategy—delivered by Maytrix—set out a framework to integrate food, beverage and service retail from the outset. Embedded from business case through to test fit, planning aligned hospitality and logistics zones with key public spaces and arrival points. This approach anticipated future growth and enabled scalable service delivery that evolves with the hospital and its users.

Retail sits at the core of the hospital’s public experience. Tenancies were located to align with high-traffic zones and waiting areas, enabling a seamless journey and clear wayfinding. The mix includes multiple cafés, a pharmacy, florist, and general retail—providing moments of respite, orientation and connection. Material cues and spatial layouts support legibility, while flexibility in tenancies ensures longevity and operational adaptability.

Positioning the hospital as a civic place of care and community interface, the design reinforces accessibility, legibility and social connection. Shared zones for movement, interaction and rest were structured into the hospital’s layout to support patients, carers, staff and the wider public. Inclusive layouts and generous sightlines enable seamless navigation and comfort, extending the campus beyond clinical function. Public-facing areas are defined by warmth, amenity and intuitive flow—enhancing access and everyday use.

Campbelltown’s hospital campus now operates as a civic setting that supports wellbeing and economic participation. Retail is not simply amenity—it enables place identity and precinct vibrancy. This strategic layering of public service and infrastructure reflects broader ambitions to position the campus as a catalyst for regional growth and health equity.

Anchoring one of NSW’s fastest-growing catchments, the Stage 2 redevelopment of Campbelltown Hospital delivers a complete model for contemporary public health. Informed by 15+ health Infrastructure projects and comprehensive expertise in retail and food and beverage strategy and design, Maytrix shaped a resilient, user-focused retail framework that supports daily operations, fosters public connection and strengthens the campus as a setting for inclusive, high-quality care.

$632M Campbelltown Hospital sets a benchmark via retail strategy and design documentation. Maytrix scoped vision for retail, integrating wayfinding and public zones for seamless community access and operational flow.
